4 ways to personalise your wedding

4 ways to personalise your wedding

If you’ve been to lots of weddings, you’ll know that traditions mean they can be quite formulaic. Most weddings have the same basic elements: a ceremony followed by a drinks reception, a formal sit-down meal with speeches, and then dancing into the night. Make your wedding a bit more personal to you with some of these ideas.

1. Write your own vows

While there are some parts of an official wedding ceremony that you can’t change for legal reasons, you can still choose to exchange vows or promises you’ve written yourselves as well. This is a lovely way of personalising your ceremony so that it’s about you and your love for each other, rather than just a legal process.

2. Pick some meaningful readings and music

Another way to make your ceremony more personal is to choose readings and music that mean something to you both. If you have a song that you identify as ‘your song’, this could feature somewhere, or you could have a friend or family member play or sing something for you. For your readings, you could pick a poem or literary extract that’s meaningful to you both, rather than choosing one of the ones the registry office suggests.

3. Find ways to work in shared interests or hobbies

Make your wedding all about you by reflecting your shared interests throughout the day. If you’re both into sailing, a nautical decoration theme would be a fun personal touch. Both love aviation? An aerobatics display or fly past will wow your guests. If you’re into art, you could hire a caricaturist to draw pictures of your guests.

4. Favours that will remind them of you

Wedding favours are another aspect of your day that you could personalise. For example, if you’re both keen gardeners, why not give your guests a packet of seeds each? If there’s a charity that means something to you, another idea is to make a donation in lieu of favours. Here are some more wedding favour ideas.
