Ideas for a summer garden party wedding

If you and your spouse-to-be love the great outdoors but still want a refined atmosphere for your big day, a garden party wedding is the perfect way to tie the knot in the warmer months. Here are some ideas for creating a garden party theme for a summer wedding to remember.

1. Outdoor venue

First things first, you’ll be needing an outdoor venue with an immaculate lawn and an area licensed for civil ceremonies. At Southdowns Manor, our beautiful gazebo fits the bill perfectly, with a wisteria walkway and backdrop to the rolling hills of the South Downs National Park.

2. Summer garden flowers and bunting

Decorate your outdoor ceremony space with the kinds of flowers you’d find in the garden in summer – think roses, sweet peas and peonies. Bunting is a must for a relaxed garden party atmosphere.

3. Pimm’s and lemonade

After your ceremony, serve summery drinks such as Pimm’s and lemonade (or elderflower cordial for non-drinkers) to keep your guests cool and refreshed.

4. Parasols

If there’s little shade at your venue, have a basket of chic paper parasols handy for guests who prefer to stay out of the sun. They make great props for your wedding photos, too.

5. Garden games

Keep your guests entertained with some fun lawn games, such as croquet or bowls. You could even hire some oversized garden games, such as giant Jenga.

6. Afternoon tea

A genteel alternative to a full formal wedding breakfast is to serve your guests afternoon tea in the garden. Think elegant tiers of sandwiches, cakes, scones and strawberries, with a glass of bubbly or tea served from vintage china teapots, cups and saucers.

7. Music

Set a civilised garden party mood by hiring live musicians to entertain your guests. A relaxed jazz group or sophisticated string quartet should strike just the right note.
